TAMARISK ON GRIFEU BEACH

The tamarisk (Tamarix gallica) is a deciduous tree or bush of the Tamaricaceae family growing to a height of 6-8 metres. It is native to the Western Mediterranean but can be found as far north as England and as far south as the Sahara. It is at its most splendorous when pink and white flowers blossom from April to June.

Tamarisks can tolerate salt-laden soils and usually thrive near the coast as their long taproots allow them to intercept underground water tables. These very attractive plants are often used for ornamental purposes and were said to be favoured by the Greek god Apollo.
