It is the only protected natural area that crosses a national frontier

NATURAL INTEREST

It consists of two quite distinct zones: the west, with vegetation of middle European type type (beech and oak trees), and the east, more Mediterranean (cork oaks and scrub), particularly important for the presence of the Mediterranean tortoise. Albera cattle constitute an important endemic species of the area.

HISTORICAL INTEREST

A wide diversity of historical remains: Dolmens, menhirs, and prehistoric cave engravings, the 8th century Benedictine monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera, the 12th century castle of Requesens, and interesting Romanesque religious buildings.
